It’s been a long time since I’ve made a first impression on a random anime, and hopefully, we’ll have this be a recurring trend on this site. I’ve read quite a few manga over the past few months as well so please look forward to first impressions on those as well. Anyways, back to the main topic. I spontaneously decided to check out Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero, an anime about a hero who after saving the world, ends up a bum and is taken care of by the very demon lord he saved the world from 10 years ago.

Ten years ago, the hero Max defeated the Demon Lord. In order to regain his power, the Demon Lord went into a deep slumber…but when he awakens, his body is only a chibi version of its fearsome form. Now curious to see what his enemy is up to, the Demon Lord visits Max, only to discover the mighty hero living in a dirty one-room apartment. The Demon Lord decides to move in with Max and help his old enemy become a formidable opponent once more!

Now what spurred me to decide to watch this anime out of the blue? Admittedly, I saw a clip of a busty naked woman chasing down the main protagonist and was intrigued, to say the least. However, contrary to what you may think (or judge), it was the comedic aspect of that clip that caught my eye. I was looking for a funny, light-hearted anime to watch, and so I decided to check it out. The premise sounded interesting too so I said what the heck.

The first three episodes were very entertaining. From the jump, I already liked the main character Max, as he lounges around like a bum, a has-been hero betrayed by the world. And the demon lord himself is quite funny too, making their dynamic very wholesome. He’s like a kid who wants to see the hero that he grew up with rise again and be respected once more. I also found it interesting, and quite ludicrous that it took ten years for the world to go from medieval to 21st century like that. However, it does mean everyone is well aware of demons and monsters exist and are not myths and legends.

In fact, for the most part, aside from the Zenia and the Demon Lord, there really isn’t much magic in their new world. However, its strengths come from the heartwarming moments of seeing the demon lord try and save the broken man that is Max, kind of like two old war veterans looking out for one another, even if it is one-sided at the moment. The plot, or side plot has Fred, one of the original fantasy party member that faced off against the demon lord trying to prevent a war against another party member that breathed the group and the kingdoms itself so I’m looking forward to seeing how that turns out. So Fred adds another dynamic of a friend trying to save his friend from what looks like depression. Or just to bring him back to glory. Or use him, it’s still too soon to tell his true motives.

Overall, I say this anime is worth checking out if you enjoy light-hearting comedy, with a touch of fan services from Zenia and oddly enough the demon lord when he transforms.
