Hmm, in surprising news, Idris & Sabrina Elba are joining forces with Crunchyroll for an animated fantasy series with the working title Dantai. Now, so far most of Crunchyroll’s original anime have been duds, let’s be real here, I honestly don’t have much faith in this anime. However, I am an optimist and a fan of Idris so I’m hoping he’ll learn from Cruhcnuhroll’s past mistakes and avoids a CGI looking-mess or a western looking animation.

According to Deadline:

Described as a “dark fantasy” and an “Afro-futuristic science fiction series,” Dantai comes from Idris Elba’s Green Door Pictures and Sabrina Elba’s Pink Towel Pictures. Each is an executive producer.

The series will be set in a city where the rise of biotechnology has created an “ever-widening gap between the haves and have-nots,” according to the official logline. “Two rising stars from either side of this divide are pitted against each other in a story that will ultimately explore equality and kinship within a corrupt society.”

It’s not every day that we get an “anime” dedicated to the region of Africa, so I am hoping that the quality, both animation and narrative-wise, at the very least live up to the expectations that fans of anime have for this genre. I’m saying this not to be harsh on Idris, in fact, I’m happy he’s doing this, but Crunchyroll’s anime portfolios have been trash, you can’t name me one universal liked Crunchyroll original anime so I hope you can understand my pessimistic and optimistic attitude towards Dantai.
