Dragon Ball Legends is an all-new Dragon Ball smartphone game that offers high quality 3D stages with character voicing. It’s a game that focuses on 1v1 action against rival players from across the globe. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the game and so today, I wanted to share my experience with the online battles, specifically focusing on the PvP aspect of the game.

I’ve managed to play up to 100 matches since the beta went live, I know this because the game lets you know when you’ve achieved a certain milestone. Dragon Ball Legends’ main gimmick is its a card action battles with intuitive controls. It took me a while to get the hang of the system, but once I learned the in’s and out’s of the game it became a lot easier. The game does not have a block system, that is done automatically, but it does sport a dodge system which you’ll have to use wisely as getting caught in a combo can be devastating.

The online has been rather smooth on my end. At the beginning I was able to find matches pretty damm fast and none of them ever lagged. However once I started to level up my characters past 150, I found it quite difficult to find matches in Ranked. I’m not sure what matchmaking system it’s using but hopefully they’ll fine tune it.

The card mechanic seems to be alright so far, I’m not sure whether the game will allow you to choose your own cards to build but maybe that might be implemented in the future. For now, it seems balanced enough. Now the only thing that I’m worried about is the balancing of the game. Especially the matchmaking. During my play-through, I was matched with people who were either super high or super low in power levels. That needs to be fined tuned to make sure that people play with those of the same level.

The game those involved some level of skill but majority of the battle are based on either luck or who can bait the other person to make a move first. It’s all  a mind game centered around a rock-paper-scissor meta-game, which is fine for a mobile game. Overall, it’s a very fun gacha game, it has a long way to go in terms of fine tuning some aspect of the matchmaking but it’s amazing for something that’s still in beta.

All that’s left now is to see whether the game is free to play friendly or not. That will decide whether I’ll support this game or not.
