Ever since I played and finished Assassin’s Creed Origin, one thing has always stood out to me from the game! And that was Aya’s portrayal in the game! From the way she handled her son’s death to us never really seeing how she founded the Assassin’s Creed in Greece, it always felt like she was never fully fleshed out. Now we know, she wasn’t thanks to an interview with voice actresses Alix Wilton Regan and Zora Bishop, who played Aya/Amunet and Cleopatra in Assassin’s Creed Origins, respectively talking about how their characters where mishandled!
In an interview with Assassin’s Creed Sisterhood, Regan expressed her frustration over the way Aya’s role in the story was continuously cut down from the script she was handed before recording began. Although she did not know the reasons behind this during recording, she expressed that watching her role grow smaller was painful and insulting to what was supposed to be an important character to the story! And she’s right! Thinking about it now, Aya’s story would have warranted a sequel to see how both herself and Bayek worked on creating the Creed but from her perspective. That would have been the opportunity to solidify a female main lead Assassin’s Creed character!
Bishop always expressed her disappointment with the handling of one of Africa’s prominent historical figures, citing that after studying the history of one of ancient Egypt’s most fascinating rulers, she resented her representation by the game somewhat, particularly the focus on her sexualization. This further highlights Ubisoft continued handling of female characters in the studio. It’s instances like these where a bit of diversity in the workplace would lend a helping hand to ensure something like this wouldn’t happen in the future! You can listen to the interview here!
