It’s been 3 years since I talked about this Sonic the Hedgehog movie and shared my thoughts on it. As the years went by. we’ve heard next to nothing until a few weeks ago. We now know the release of this movie and who’s working on it. Paramount Pictures has given its “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie a holiday-season release for Nov. 15, 2019. With that, as an avid Sonic fan, I’d like to share some of my hopes and concern for this movie and what I expect and fear from it.
From what we know, the project had been in the works at Sony, but the studio let its film rights lapse and Paramount picked up the project in October. Paramounts a most notable for the Transformers movies, Kung Fu Panda, How to train your Dragon and Madagascar. I picked out these films as they were some of the works I’ve recognized and watched. Now say want what you will about these movies but the it came to the CGI, they were good for their time. Heck, the first transformer movie still looks fantastic.
Speaking of transformers, despite my disdain on humans fighting alongside the Autobots, the mix of CGI and real-life worked pretty well. So I’m hoping that Paramounts has enough budget to really make Sonic look great on the bigscreen. That was actually one of my concerns back in 2015. Of course, I know visuals aren’t enough to make a great film but it helps a lot.
Neal H. Moritz is producing under his Original Film banner. “Deadpool” director Tim Miller will serve as executive producer, along with Toby Ascher. Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons will be the co-producers. I can’t say much about these directors and producers. Sure they are some good films under their belt but it’s not enough to bring my hopes up. Sonic has had a rocky past few years and really needs something great under his belt soon.
As I’ve said in the past, I’d much prefer if the movie went FULL CGI and not this half/half live-action/CG hybrid. crap they’re going for with this movie. There’s no doubt that they’re gonna try and make the human actors that the main focus somehow and that’s something I don’t want to see. As I’ve said in my previous post, I like humans (60% of the time) but I’ve always felt that humans end up holding back the capabilities of non-human characters.
Take a look at the transformers movies for example, there were so many opportunities for an epic, all out robot vs robot fight, but the Autobots spend most of their time focusing on protecting the humans, shit, the humans had more screen time than the actual transformers (in my opinion at least) in the movie. I don’t wan to see that with the Sonic Movie. I came to see Sonic, not the actors.
As long as the narrative is good and the overall plot makes sense, coupled with the right amount of humor that doesn’t cross over into cringe-territory then we should be fine with it
Anyways that’s all I got to say about this topic. We should be seeing a trailer for this movie soon and with Mario also getting his own movie, you can bet the old Mario vs Sonic comparison will follow with it.
