This week has been one hell of a roller-coaster for the Americans, and to some extent, the rest of the world. Many gaming companies have vocalized their support of equality & justice, and their distaste for discrimination & injustice! And although I am skeptical of whether most of it is genuine, it is nice to know and see nonetheless! Nevertheless however, some of their “extended” activism should be looked into, as I feel it may have caused more damage that good.
Now if you don’t know what I’m talking about, some gaming services have opted to “add in-game messages” online services, in support for the Black Lives Matter movement! With RockStar even shutting down its servers in respect to George Floyd. According to what I was able to gather, it was their way for showing that they’re some issues that we shouldn’t look aware or ignore! I agree, but I wonder why haven’t they been as active behind the scene to really show that discrimination against anyone is bad, that human violation is bad and everyone’s human rights should be respected! My point is, their message has never been consistent at all, and it’s frustrating and disheartening, as I can’t tell what’s genuine and what is only done for profit!
I am not in favour of this kind of activism! I understand that they’re trying to show support for the cause, but I fear this will only sour people to the cause overall! There’s so much negative stuff one can take before they need to withdraw themselves to recharge, and gaming for most people is that power-station! I mean sure, they’ve weeded out the actual racist within their community, awesome, but this will ultimately impact the support, or at the very least the empathy that people might have for the Black Lives Matter! Turning off services like that or adding that in-game message (which is great for awareness I guess), is still short-sighted and truth be told helps no one!
This isn’t the most viable way to show support! Staying consistent with your message would have been great! I’m referring to the times where John Boyega had been sized down to not be prominent in the poster in China, punishing Blitzchung when he spoke out for his support of human rights for Hong Kong, or removing someone from a team or organisation that has add years of toxic behavior within the community, all of which only gets taken care of ONCE there’s enough backlash are all things that makes it had to even see them as a force for good!
I believe that there’s a more direct way these companies can show their support, as this will not bade well with the masses in the long run! People don’t forget hypocrisy that easily! Often times, it almost feels like, these “activism” are just opportune moments for them to carry out a quick maintenance booster, camouflaged as a signal for justice! However, I can neither prove nor disprove it! Instead, I’ll leave you with this quote:
It’s something to think about as we observe the happenings in America, and the actions of its industries! We’re fighting to the good fight for justice and equality, but we need to ensure we don’t get trapped in snares of those who wear sheep-clothed disguises! That we don’t allow disingenuous people to destroy years of true activism!
I also wanted to touch on certain celebrities speaking out for the Black Lives Matter! I don’t know if you’ve seen them, but there’s been videos of them purposely pretending to be for the cause, yet in the end, it was all just a facade to gain clout or recognition! Here’s but one of many examples you’ll see online:
Coupled in with celebs not speaking the truth, doing their best to separate the true peaceful protesters from the rioters, whether these rioters were expressing their frustration or using that opportune moment o live our their chaotic fantasy, will only further harm the cause, and the people that’s fighting the cause! There’s nothing wrong in condemning the riots while highlighting the peaceful protest for change and reformation of the US police force!
The racist will always be racist and their mind are made up, but for the rest of the world watching, this could be the difference between support and empathy or condemnation and hatred! And I’ve already seen certain key individuals in the media beginning the slandering and tarnishing of the Black Lives Matter name!
This reminds me of another quote:
I bring this up today so that you all may be aware, or at least more aware of what goes on around you! Let me know what you guys think!
