Former Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime, along with his wife and a handful of Blizzard veterans, Morhaime has founded a new game publisher and developer called Dreamhaven.

Dreamhaven, according to Mike Morhaine, was founded to demonstrate that games are a force for good, and his overall goal is not to make money!

“We’ve learned a ton about what goes into creating an environment that allows creators to do their best work, and we were very successful doing that for many years at Blizzard,” Morhaime said in an interview on Friday. “We reached a crossroads where we reassessed what we want to do with the rest of our lives. For Amy and I, that meant taking a step back, looking at all the things that we could possibly do and deciding to come back full circle and engage with a team of people that we know and trust and share values with and see if, ‘Hey, with all the experience we have, maybe we can do it even better this time.’”

I found this particularly interesting for two reasons! The first is that it proves that Activision encroaching behavior is very well frowned upon by its employees who feel like they’re no longer creating games based on creativity but rather what can make them the most money. This was something that was also highlighted in the interview!

The second thing is the irony of it all! I stumbled upon the information that Activision, like Dreamhaven, was founded on the exact same reason. The company was founded as Activision, Inc. in October 1979 in Sunnyvale, California, by former Atari game developers, upset at how they were treated at Atari, to develop their own games for the popular Atari 2600 home video game console. Goes to show you that you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

Dreamhaven is focused on making multiplayer games, so let’s see what they’ve got in store for us in the coming future. The two studios, Moonshot games, and Secret Door both are working on something right now, with the former working on the bigger title and the latter on a more personal project! For some reason, I have high hopes for the quality of games that will come from both these studios!
