Yeah, most of you all might come at my neck for this but I really feel like GOG is doing too much when it comes to trying to be “the good guy” in the gaming community and eventually, it’s going to bite them in the ass.
A few days ago, GOG announced that they’re changing their refund policy as part of a “declaration of trust” to consumers.
According to their blog:
“Everyone at GOG believes in a ‘gamers-first’ approach. The latest update to our voluntary Refund Policy adds another piece to this customer-friendly experience. And it all sums up in one sentence: starting now, you can get a full refund up to 30 days after purchasing a product, even if you downloaded, launched, and played it. That’s it.”
Previously, refunds were given only if the game hadn’t been downloaded and played, or has an issue. However now players will be able to request a refund at any point during a period of 30 days after purchase, no strings attached. That is a major issue. I mean, let’s be real here, it only takes on bad apple to ruin it for everyone. It’s not a matter of if it will happens but when it’ll happen. And their games have no DRM. It’s literally a recipe for disaster waiting to happen.
In fact, realistically it makes no sense to even have a policy like that in the first place. Most gamers can finish a game within under two weeks. This attempt to be perceived as the “good guy” among games will certainly come bite them back. What’s even crazier is that they didn’t even tell the developers who’s games are on their platform about this policy change. Look, if they really want to offer a good return plus, do what Steam is doing and offer a less two hours total within two weeks deal, and amp the hours up to four or something.
I know many will see this as a big win for consumers, but I feel like this is an unnecessary step taken by GOG that realistically makes no sense from a business standpoint.
