DEATH NOTE: SPECIAL ONE-SHOT Chapter Review – A New Kira Emerges!

So, outta nowhere Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata decided to drop this Death Note: Special One Shot to the world, based in modern times and I have to say, it’s pretty damm good.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I decided to pick up the manga but man, this 88-page spin-off featuring Minoru Tanaka as the latest human was an interesting and compelling tale. who has the power of the Death Note. I liked the concept of a genius who doesn’t know how to apply gift, yet understands his flaws well, while still showing his genius in other areas. Kinda like the whole saying by Albeit Einstein: “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”! There are many forms that intelligence takes in this world, and focusing on just one aspect alone as a metric can oftentimes be short-sighted in my opinion.

Now to the premise of this manga, which how Minoru used the book without actually using the book itself is pretty smart. Despite the fact that he got screwed over, his line of thinking was something I doubt many people would’ve thought of had they’d been in his position. I never imagined that the bidding would reach nation level-wide but that’s what made it interesting. If such a power had existed in this world, would it have played out that way? I kinda doubt it but it is an intriguing proposition. The idea of either the U.S. or China having that kind of power is scary as all hell, and we all know that absolute power, corrupts absolutely. It was interesting to see how the world of Light had changed over that last 10 years, to the point of people studying the guy in history books. I had thought that they’d just let it fade out of people’s minds, but I guess teaching people of this was a better way to not let history repeat itself.

Overall, it was an enjoyable chapter!
