So I finally watched the Mandalorian. I couldn’t wait any longer to see it. With all the hype it has garnered over the past few weeks, I needed to check it out and see what the buzz was all about. This is the way!
Now, I don’t necessary want to call this a review, as I don’t think I’ll be able to do all four episodes justice at the moment, but I do want to share my overall impression watching this series as someone who isn’t a hardcore Star Wars fan but has recently seen the original trilogy and the sequel trilogy, prequel to come soon.
The Mandalorian is set five years after the events of Return of the Jedi and follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter that’s apparently beyond the reaches of the New Republic. I think what’s interesting here is that the whole premise of the Mandalorian is unique and fresh take on the Star Wars franchise. There is no chosen one or a major empire on the horizon, it’s just story about a Mandalorian taking odd jobs across the galaxy while taking care of a baby Yoda (the name of the race hasn’t been confirmed yet), who as we have just learned has an innate connection to the force. It’s something new!
I think what also led to the Mandalorian’s charm and why everyone for the most part is enjoying it is because it has this old samurai films and westerns vibe to it. A one man vs the world, all in the name of his space clan. That’s a premise a lot of people can easily get behind.
You’re also drawn to learn more about the Mandalorians, what’s their purpose in the universe and why they don’t take off their helmets. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t think this group was ever mention, so it’s something new added to the Star Wars lore. Correct me if I’m wrong. Not to mention, our main guy is shrouded in mystery so you’re interested to learn his backstory and what led to him becoming the way that he’s now.
Of course, with the addition of the Baby Yoda, which has stolen the hearts of many, we suddenly now also want to know more about their species and why they’re so drawn and connected to the Force. On top of that, there’s also the mystery of why there’s even a baby Yoda in the first place. Are there many of his kind? Is this just Yoda but reincarnated like a Phoenix? A clone perhaps? And why was this baby Yoda all a lone? Many questions, no answer!
Essentially, the Mandalorian is telling and exploring more facets of the StarWars Universe, and people seem to be all for it, in my opinion. So far, everything going great. Aside for episode 4 which seemed little odd, the series is doing great and hopefully it ends just as strong as it started.
