Once in a while I tend to talk about techs that interest me. Phones usually ain’t it, however, this one in particular is one that I wanted to share as it highlights a significant turning point for the Africa continent and its pursuit of technology advancement and ownership. The Mara Phone, the first high specification, affordable smartphone manufactured in Rwanda, Africa is the first of such many ventures.
According to it’s description:
Mara Phones is committed to enhancing and enriching the lives of the people of Africa. Manufacturing in Africa enables job creation and also making the smartphone more affordable to all, contributing to business and development on the continent.
Manufactured in Africa, ready for the global market! The Mara X has 16GB storage space which retails for 120,250 Rwandan francs ($130), while the more advanced Mara Z model has 32GB storage and is on sale for 175,750 Rwandan francs ($190).
To me, this is a step in the right direction and will further bolsters the economy of Rwanda. This means that they can now compete on the global scale. As they learn from the feedback they will receive from the sales of the Mara phones, they’ll continue to improve and create more powerful phones, just like how the Oneplus has grown to such a huge scale. Also, I really like the “Made in Africa” logo! It looks clean.
So yeah, congrats on Rwanda, and MaraGroup & I really look forward to seeing what’s to come in the future.
