With all that Pokemon Sword and Shield hype going on, some of y’all may have forgotten that another game about taming monsters is also coming out in 2019 (hopefully), and that’s Digimon Survive. We haven’t heard much since it’s reveal back in 2018 but hopefully that will change in the upcoming months.

For those of you who may not know about this game or need a refresher:

Digimon Survive, a survival simulation RPG centered on story and choices for PlayStation 4, PC and Switch.

The protagonist of Digimon Survive is a boy named Takuma Momotsuka, a second-year middle school student who is suddenly transported from camp to a dangerous world where life-threatening monsters wander about. Together with his partner Digimon Agumon, he will boldly face his severe situation and embark on a survival adventure in order to return home.

Now, why would I be excited for a new Digimon game, aside from the fact that I am a huge Digimon fan? Well, one of the biggest reason is the fact that this Digimon game will have more a more mature story that actually has multiple endings to it. Story in games for me, has always been a driving force for playing games, especially if they’re an RPGs. I like to be invested and immerse myself in a whole new world while I’m grinding away to level up my team. So when they announced a grim and dark Digimon game with an emphasis on mature content, you know I had to jump on this Digi-Train.

Not only that, but your choices will have weight to them, to the point that characters will die if you make the wrong (or right) choices. Your choices will also affect the Digivolution of your Digimons and will change the development of the story as you progress. I don’t know how many endings this game will have but I’m hoping that these choices are unique and meaningful, to the point that they make you feel regret after making that choice.

The other aspect as to why I’m hyped for this game is the combat system. Yes, the game will still be a turn-based game, however, they’re expanding on this even further. In Digimon Survive, you can move your Digimon partners around the field and fight against enemies from different position, adding another element of strategy to the game. And it appears that during battle, there’s a stamina system called “Energy”, which is used to perform actions, including Digivolution. Skillfully utilizing your Energy is the key to victory. Think Pokemon meets Fire Emblems.

The game is coming out on the PC, PS4 and Switch but I believe that Digimon Survive will sell the most on the Nintendo Switch. This will most likely lead to a sequel, if the game sells well (and is of good quality of course). Pokemon has always been concerned about being inclusive and family friendly, whereas Digimon isn’t scared to take the plunge into something more serious and emotional, that’s why I’m excited and hyped for this game. Plus, now we got that Pokemon vs Digimon old school rivalry again so it’s a win for me (I’m getting both).

Let me know your thoughts on Digimon Survive?
