So I just heard that the Reaper of Death, also known as Hollywood has chosen it’s next victim from the anime world! Now normally, this would be a concerning matter, however, I think that maybe, this may actually be a good thing. If there’s one thing that Hollywood has gotten good at doing, it’s making super-hero movies. And this My Hero Academia Live-Action Movie by Legendary could be the bridge to finally having a great anime adaptation and here’s why!According to Nerdist:
The film will be produced by Legendary, with Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter overseeing on their behalf, and Ryosuke Yoritomi shepherding the project for Shueisha. Toho will distribute the film in Japan.
These are the same guys who are currently working on Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Detective Pikachu in 2019, followed by Godzilla vs. Kong in May 2020. So they aren’t new when it comes to adapting anime IP’s. Whether, they’re good or not remains to be seen. So far, they’re going to be showing the movie in Japan, so no word on if the live-action will hit over-seas.
Now remember, My Hero Academia is NOT the first super hero movie to be based in a school environment, that honor belongs to another “popular” movie called Sky High, 2005 American superhero comedy film about an airborne school for teenage superheroes. OK, so let’s talk. I know that past adaptations have been horrifically bad and straight up insulting to their source material but I feel like this might be the one that actually does well.
Ignoring Netflix’s Death Note and how they COMPLETELY changed the plot, if Legendary sticks to the source material FAITHFULLY, then we might have something epic in our hands. We are living in a time where super hero movies are constantly dominating the box office. These are the same people who’ve made Batman: The Dark Knight, Dark Knight Rises, WatchMen and Godzilla. If they can get the right producer and directors that are passionate enough for thsi project on board, then we may very well get out FIRST great live adaptation. It’s such a good opportunity that it’s be asinine to ruin it.
The casting is also key for this My Hero Academia’s success. As long as the characters are ACCURATELY represented and the actors are decent enough we should be good. We don’t need another TITAN on our hands. Anyways, let me know your thoughts on this live action movie.
