The sonic comics have always done a great job in filling in the gaps that the games tend to leave out. Heck, they even go above and beyond to give us more materials for us craving fans. So when I heard that IDW have picked up the Sonic The Hedgehog series, I was pretty hyped to say the least.

I decided to finally read the IDW comics after months of me hyping them up. The story continues after the events of Sonic Forces, with Eggman finally been defeated. The world is still overrun by rouge badnicks and Sonic and his friends are scouring the globe trying to get rid of them. At first the attacks seem to be random and incoherent but after a while, the attacks began to be more coordinated. On top of that, Blaze the Cat has come to join the fun, telling Sonic that the Sol EMERALDS have foretold her of a crisis that will fall upon Sonic’s world.  Oh and now there’s two Eggman’s in the mix now. Overall, the story side of things is still as fun, hilarious and epic as a Sonic Comic should be.

The story seems to now tie in with the video game world so maybe we might see some of these elements in future Sonic games. I’ve always said that if they could blend the two worlds together without substituting one for the other, then that would be awesome. Sonic Forces had an interesting concept, but what ruined it (aside from bland gameplay) was the lack of cutscenes. It was really difficult to visualize the severity of Eggman’s world domination.

If there’s one thing that stands out as soon as you pick up the comic, it’s the art style. I really like the art direction the team at IDW are going for with the Sonic comics. Each panel felt vibrant and captured the sense of adventure that Sonic is all about. Sonic may have had a rough time in the past with his games, but there’s a reason why he’s has such a dedicated fan base over the years. He has character and personality and the comics writers are doing a great job at displaying that with each page. Not just Sonic, in fact every member from Sonic world all have their characters represented well in this new series.

I dunno, maybe it’s the Sonic fanboy in me but I really like this new Sonic comic and I can’t wait to see more in the future. If you haven’t already read it, give it a shot and if you have, let me know what you think of it.
