Once again, it’s time to check out another new Spring 2018 anime. This time it’s an anime called MEGALOBOX. It’s interesting how so far, every anime that I’ve decided to give a chance has impressed me a lot. This one is no exception. It’s an anime about a underdog looking to become something and finds an opponents that may help him reach his full potential. It’s boxing meets anime in the most glorious way.
Here’s the summary:
A desolate land stretches out from the city of poverty. A motorcycle speeds recklessly, blowing clouds of sand and dust. The rider is the protagonist of this story – he has neither a name nor a past. All he has is his ring name, “Junk Dog” and a technique for rigging MEGALOBOX matches with his pal Gansaku Nanbu, which they use to support their hand-to-mouth lives. JD is bored, resigned, and unfulfilled. Yuri has been the reigning champion of MEGALOBOX for the past few years. He has the skills and presence of a true champion. This is a story of JD and his rival, Yuri.
Lets face it, we’ve seen this sort of set up before in boxing movie. However, the twist here is that the boxers of this world use a Gears to enhance their fighting capabilities. What did stand out was the animation and visuals. Unlike most anime, MEGALOBOX seems to be inspired by TOMORROW’S JOE (aka Ashita no Joe). It themes a retro style to it look of while merging a futuristic dystopia world.
Despite this been like every boxing movie I’ve seen growing up, I couldn’t help to get hyped when Yuri pulled up on JD. After seeing the animation when they box, I was fully ready for the fight that’s about to take place. There’s something about cheering for the underdog that really gets to you. The first epsidoe gas done a pretty good job in impressing me so I’ll be watching this anime and how it develops over the 13 episodes.
