Like any anime fans out there, once in a while we tend to stubble upon an anime that we sometimes regret watching, and other times we find a anime that’s actually pretty dope, for me that’s Basquash!…

Basquash!.full.60601

Basquash! is a sports and sci-fi anime that involves characters playing basketball while riding mechas. The mechs however aren’t your regular Gundam robots, but instead follows a more Megas XLRish style instead.

The story follows a young boy named Dan who loves basketball but hates the BFB (Big Foot Basketball) due to an accident that crippled his sister. After his attempts to destroy the sport, it actually ended up making it more popular when he showed up the during an BFB game and awed the crowd with his highly skilled, street-styled demonstration under his alias, “Dunk Mask”, on his own Big Foot which he named Dangan. We find out very early on that Dan’s ultimate  motives and goal is to get his sister to the moon in order to fix her legs.

The plot takes place in the world of “Earth Dash”, an alternate, futuristic version of our Earth where human society split between the far more advanced lunar society and that of the planet’s surface.

Honestly for an anime that aired in January 2009, it’s visually actually holds up pretty well and the animation is nice too. As the story progresses, we get introduced to a number of other main characters in the show like, Sela D Miranda, a skilled basketball and BFB player with the nickname of “Platinium Gale” and Iceman Hotty, a vicious BFB player with a knack in yelling “DESTROY”. Each of the characters introduced in the show have interesting backstories to tell and the character development for each of them was pretty decent. Most of them aren’t too relate-able but they are fun to watch in their own rights.

There were times though when Dan did annoy me, particularly in one episode but for the sake of avoiding spoilers, I can’t say exactly what it is, but you’ll know when you see it. The story itself is pretty easy to follow, “most of the time” anyways, and the pacing is pretty decent for a 26 episode anime. Now there was a bit of fan-service in this anime but not too much to actually ruining the experience. The music or OST in the anime are pretty OK, nothing in particular stood out to me besides those random High School Musical moments but they didn’t make my ears bleed so it gets a pass in my book.

So to conclude this, if you have a genuine interest in Basketball, sci-fi or are just looking for something to binge in-between your main anime then I would recommended this anime for you. It’s funny, has an interesting story to it and overall the characters are quite memorable. I enjoyed my time with this anime.

Let me know your thoughts if you have watched the anime.
